Christmas From Heaven: The Candy Bomber Story

I was jumping around on YouTube today, watching various things and ended up at the Mormon Tabernacle Choir page watching various Christmas performances. Having one listed with Tom Brokaw caught my attention and I was curious. What I wasn't expecting was a full on cry fest at the end of this segment. Talk about touching and honored to have such a great man represent the United States.

Several things crossed my mind as I was watching and then pondering after the fact. First, my daughter. I knew I had to share this story with her. What a great, fun spirited thing he did. A quote in the video really touches on something I've always tried to instill in my daughter. "From Little Things, Come Big Things". With small deeds and love, people really can change the world.

Next, I realize just how much I have a fondness for Tom Brokaw. I grew up listening to him on the news, as did everyone else, but I really grew a new level of respect for him as an adult, when he authored the book "The Greatest Generation". At the time, I didn't purchase the book, but in the past year or two, I picked a copy up at the thrift store to add to my personal history collection. It's still sitting on the shelf, unread, but has now become a new priority.

When I watched the follow up interview and realized Gail Halvorsen was from Utah, my mind instantly wondered and then assumed he was a Latter Day Saint. Then I recalled that in the movie trailer for Meet The Mormons they said one of the members highlighted was a WWII vet. Sure enough, it was Mr. Halvorsen and they couldn't have picked a greater representation of what it means to be a Mormon.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. I warn you, after reading comments, apparently I wasn't the only one who cried during the last 5 minutes.

There are also various books telling the story of the Candy Bomber. Here are a few of those publications.

Time to Get your TV Spook On!

Halloween season is in full swing. Not only do I love the colors of Fall, but I love seeing a world full of Bats, Witches, Skulls, Owls and Zombies. If you want to bring a little of that fun, family friendly spook factor into your home, here are a few Halloween TV specials I'm looking forward to.

This Wednesday the 15th, ABC will be airing both Toy Story of Terror and the classic It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Toy Story of Terror was a TV short released last year that I missed, so I will have the DVR set and ready to record.

ABC Family will kick off it's 13 Night of Halloween on the 19th, so here is a preview of that.

For fans of the series The Good Witch, I have good news. First, a new movie The Good Witch's Wonder will premier October 25th and secondly, the Hallmark Channel has picked up the "Good Witch" TV series and it is set to premier in 2015. I think Hallmark is doing a good thing, by bringing in more TV series. I'm really enjoying them.

For fans of outdoor decorating, the makers of The Great Christmas Light Fight, are bringing you The Great Halloween Fright Fight. This will will air on October 28th on ABC.

The possibilities are limitless, depending on your taste. Even the History Channel, The Food Network, Turner Classic Movie and the Travel Channel have Halloween specials. I still need to do a search myself and see what catches my fancy. I'm a big fan of the Food War Specials, so I'm sure that will be one of them.

If spookier is your preference, the AMC channel will begin airing it's Fright Fest schedule on Friday the 17th. Want to watch a marathon of some of the classic horror/slasher series, this is the place to find them.

A Christmas Story: Everything You Want to Know!

During my Christmas quest this week, I stumbled across another museum and this one is a full size tribute to "A Christmas Story". Talk about full scale; in 2005 the actual house where the movie was filmed, was purchased on Ebay by a super fan. Fundraising and restoration happened almost immediately and he was able to open the house and museum to the public in 2006.

You can tour A Christmas Story House and Museum year around. The museum features original props, costumes and memorabilia from the film, as well as hundreds of rare behind-the-scenes photos. They also have activities throughout the year, including several activities for Christmas in July.

If you visit their page, I suggest you check out several of the videos on the front page. Their is a great video piece by NBC about the purchase of the house. If you are a fan, I'm telling you, the museum page has endless amounts of information and trivia related to A Christmas Story.

If you are looking to purchase something related to A Christmas Story, they have a shop directly across the street from the museum or you can purchase directly online. The Red Rider Leg Lamps Store has everything all in one place. Anything you want, can be found in that store. Wow...it's endless!

In my quest, I also found details on A Christmas Story: The Musical. From what I've read, it received great reviews and was nominated for several Emmys this past year. It toured in both 2012 and 2013, so check back later in the year and see if it will be in your area this year.

Christmas in July Day 9: The Rosemary Clooney House

I stumbled on a fabulous find today: The Rosemary Clooney House.

Why does The Rosemary Clooney House in KY, make my cut for Christmas in July you ask? Because it not only houses memorabilia from her entire career, but most importantly has the largest collection of White Christmas memorabilia in the world.

My daughter and I are total museum junkies. In fact, we need a bumper sticker that reads "Will stop for Roadside Museums".  In all seriousness, I would be delighted to visit her home and see the dresses up close. I read that the Blue "Sister" dress was recently restored and rededicated at the museum. And if Rosemary doesn't do it for you, how about George her nephew? They also recently added his Monuments Men military uniform and his iconic overalls from Oh Brother, to the George Clooney area of the house.

As of today, I've added the Clooney house to my list of places to visit, when I make it to Kentucky someday.

Here are some additional photos and sketches of Rosemary and her dresses that I happen to love.

And a little music to share...

Christmas in July Day 8: Jewish Songwriters? Oy Vey....

Did you know that many of our favorite Holiday tunes are written by Jewish songwriters? I've know about The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) and about Irving Berlin, but had no clue there were so many.

I was watching a cute Christmas movie called Switchmas, about a Jewish boy "Ira Finkelstein", who was infatuated with Christmas and just wanted to celebrate it once.

In one of the scenes he ran into a Santa, who happened to be Jewish and he was confused about why a Jewish man would pay Santa. In that scene he started listing all the Jewish songwriters who have composed famous Christmas music. I was rather surprised and did some more research. Thanks to InterFaithFamily and BuzzFeed I found a complete list.

"Winter Wonderland"

"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)"

"Let It Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!"

 "White Christmas"

 "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer"

"Run Rudolph, Run"

"It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year"

"Silver Bells"

"l'll Be Home For Christmas"

"A Holly Jolly Christmas"

"You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch"

"Rocking Around the Christmas Tree"

Grumpy Cat's Worse Christmas Ever....Really?

You know, you see these animal videos go viral and think....Why didn't I think of that?  Well, the owners of Grumpy Cat, have gone beyond marketing images and are now making a Christmas movie for Lifetime. The storyline reads as " Grumpy stars as a lonely kitty in a mall pet store, where she deters potential owners with her grouchy face deters. Her bad luck changes when a 12-year-old girl named Chyrstal falls head over paws for the sour puss."

Let me say, as a Christmas Movie Junkie, my expectations aren't exactly high, but I'll keep an OPEN MIND and let you know, just how this masterpiece turns out.

A New Hallmark Christmas Movie for CIJ

It's mid May and I can't help but start making plans for Christmas in July. Just yesterday, thanks to It's a Wonderful Movie word got out that The Hallmark Channel will premiere a new Christmas movie on July 12th. It's titled "Angels Sing" and stars Harry Connick Jr., Connie Britton, Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson.

Here's a official movie trailer.

They also plan on airing Christmas movies, 24hours a day, starting July 7th, 2014 during their Christmas in July Celebration. It normally coincides with the Keepsake Ornament release and open house, so I'll let you know as I hear more.

Shirley Temple and Christmas...A Look Back!

The Hallmark Channel posted this picture this morning to honor the loss of Shirley Temple. It's as cute as cute can be and got me wondering, just how many Christmas movies Shirley Temple did make? I did a quick search and out of 52 movies, I found these 4 that were entirely Christmas themed or had scenes that began or ended at Christmas.

Here are the storylines as described on IMDB:

Heidi - "Eight-year-old Heidi is orphaned and her selfish maternal Aunt Dete takes her to the mountains to live with Adolph Kramer, her grumpy, old, outcast, survivalist paternal grandfather. Heidi brings her grandfather back into mountain society through her angelic ways, sheer love, and adorable personality. When Aunt Dete steals Heidi away to be the companion of a rich man's invalid daughter, the grandfather is enraged and sets out to get her back. Back in Frankfurt, loved and adored by everyone she touches except the villainous housekeeper, Fraulein Rottenmeier, she thrives but is inwardly very sad and lonely. No matter what anyone tells her, Heidi, with faith, hope, and the stubbornness she inherited from her grandfather, knows that some day she will be reunited with the him and the beloved people of the mountain's little village."

Bright Eyes - "When a maid is accidentally hit by a car and killed, her young orphaned daughter is forced to live with the snooty couple she used to work for. A custody battle soon ensues between an aviator who adores the little girl and the couple's crotchety Uncle Ned."

Stowaway - "Chin-Ching gets lost in Shanghai and is befriended by American playboy Tommy Randall. She falls asleep in his car which winds up on a ship headed for America. Susan Parker, also on the ship, marries Randall to give Chin-Ching a family."

I'll Be Seeing You - "Mary Marshall, serving a six year term for accidental manslaughter, is given a Christmas furlough from prison to visit her closest relatives, her uncle and his family in a small Midwestern town. On the train she meets Zach Morgan, a troubled army sergeant on leave for the holidays from a military hospital. Although his physical wounds have healed, he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and is subject to panic attacks. The pair are attracted to one another and in the warm atmosphere of the Christmas season friendship blossoms into romance, but Mary is reluctant to tell him of her past and that she must shortly return to prison to serve the remainder of her sentence."

Seeing these photos, definitely brings back memories of watching Shirley Temple movies as a kid. Being a kid in the 70's, meant very few channels and lots of black and white movies on the weekends. I personally recall seeing 3 of these 4 movies. Especially Heidi. I'm not sure how many times I watched that one, but probably a handful! To think that she retired from film making at the age of 22 is astonishing and has yet to be duplicated. Hat's off to Shirley!!

Hallmark Hall of Fame...Did it again with Remember Sunday

If you look back at my post, next to Christmas, you'll see I love cheesy, love story movies on the Hallmark Channel. Tonight, although it seems to be a repeat, I watched the movie Remember Sunday. I was a little leery at first, thinking it would be some sort of copycat of 50 first dates, but it quickly stood on it's own. I think I enjoyed it because of the actors and it was a bit quirky. What does quirky mean??? I'm not exactly sure, so I looked it up "something that is strange/not normal but cool".  I don't know why I think of this word, but hey, it's the first thing that came to mind. Maybe because he was a cosmologist before he lost his memory, and she dreamed of being a florist. Maybe it was the rollerskating or the fact that he worked on vintage jewelry?

Now, to top it off, it wasn't just any Hallmark movie, it was a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. For those of you who don't frequent the Hallmark Channel or catch them on an occasional Sunday night special, that means a night full of Hallmark Card commercials. And to me Hallmark Card commercials = Cry Fest. Most I've seen over and over, so the tears have slowed down a little, but one in particular still does it to me EVERY TIME. Tonight, I was caught in the midst of a cry fest over the dishwasher, when my husband came into the kitchen for a dinner check. A little embarrassing..YES, but I'm not ashamed to say that I miss my daughter and that commercial goes straight to my heart. I've posted it before, but it's worth sharing again.

I highly suggest you catch it if you can this weekend. I know it's Superbowl Sunday, but set that DVR. If not this go around, maybe next time.
